Global LGBTQ+ News Round Up Sunday 30 August 2026: Poland, Lebanon And Ecuador

The final week of August has brought another mixed picture for LGBTQ+ communities around the world. Poland has introduced an important change for same sex couples who married elsewhere in the European Union, while representatives from eleven West African countries have backed a new declaration calling for greater protection and inclusion.

Elsewhere, a rare legal ruling involving a transgender woman has become public in Lebanon, while a political stunt involving two former NBA players has drawn criticism in the United States. Ecuador is facing scrutiny over a new adoption law, and Australia has launched new healthcare resources for trans and gender diverse young people.

Europe

Poland Changes Recognition Of Foreign Same Sex Marriages

New civil registry rules came into effect in Poland on 23 August, allowing official marriage records to accommodate same sex couples who legally married in another European Union country. New document templates can now record marriages between two women or two men, removing a practical barrier faced by some couples seeking to have their foreign marriage entered into Poland's civil register.

The change does not introduce marriage equality within Poland itself. It does, however, improve recognition for qualifying couples whose marriages were legally concluded elsewhere in the EU and follows European court decisions concerning the recognition of marriages when couples move between member states.

Eleven Countries Back Cotonou Declaration

LGBTQI+ representatives from eleven West African countries have issued the Cotonou Declaration following a regional gathering in Porto Novo, Benin, from 21 to 23 August. Representatives came from Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

The declaration calls for stronger protection of LGBTQI+ people, increased community support and closer engagement between human rights organisations and faith communities. The gathering also marked the tenth anniversary of the Interfaith Diversity Network of West Africa and comes during a difficult period for LGBTQ+ communities across several countries in the region.

Asia

Indonesian Groups Push Back Against Proposed LGBTQ+ Bill

Amnesty International Indonesia published an open letter on 24 August urging parliament to reject proposals for an LGBTQ Prevention and Response Bill. The letter itself was dated earlier in August, but was published more widely during the current roundup period.

Civil society organisations involved in the campaign argue that legislation specifically targeting people because of sexual orientation or gender identity could increase discrimination, criminalisation and stigma. The proposals have not become law, and campaigners are calling for any legislation to respect Indonesia's constitutional protections and international human rights commitments.

Middle East

Rare Transgender Legal Recognition Emerges In Lebanon

A rare legal ruling allowing a transgender woman to change her official sex and first name in Lebanon became public during the week. Judge Wassim Zahreddine issued the decision in April, but details were only published more recently after Lebanese media reviewed the ruling.

The judgment allowed the woman to amend her civil records and drew on an earlier Lebanese appeals court decision involving a transgender man. It does not create an automatic right for all transgender people in Lebanon and may still be appealed, but its publication represents a notable legal development in a country where changes to official gender records remain uncommon.

North America

Anti Trans WNBA Stunt Draws Backlash

Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White faced widespread criticism after declaring themselves transgender women and announcing plans to enter the 2027 WNBA draft. The declarations were widely treated as a political stunt intended to mock transgender inclusion in women's sport rather than genuine attempts to join the league.

WNBA sources subsequently confirmed that neither man was eligible for the draft. The controversy intensified after Kanter Freedom became involved in a courtside confrontation at a Chicago Sky game and was later banned from future Sky home games, while players criticised the use of transgender people and professional athletes as part of a political provocation.

South America

Ecuador Adoption Law Faces LGBTQ+ Rights Criticism

Human Rights Watch raised concerns on 27 August over Ecuador's new adoption legislation, which came into force on 14 August. The law explicitly prevents single lesbian, gay and bisexual people from adopting, adding to existing restrictions preventing same sex couples from adopting jointly.

The organisation also criticised provisions allowing support for certain gender affirming healthcare for a transgender child to be considered when authorities assess whether parental rights should be removed. Human Rights Watch warned that this could discourage parents from supporting transgender children or seeking appropriate medical advice.

Oceania

Australia Launches New Trans Youth Health Resources

New healthcare pathway resources for trans, non binary and gender diverse children and young people were launched in Victoria on 27 August. The project was developed by Transcend Australia alongside the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, Monash Health, Orygen and Transgender Victoria.

The resources are designed to make services and referral routes easier to understand for healthcare professionals, community organisations, young people and families. They follow consultation that identified long waiting lists, unclear pathways and limited awareness of available support as barriers to accessing appropriate care.
