Girls is returning for five new episodes, but will Adam Driver be back?
HBO is reviving Girls for five new episodes in 2027, with Lena Dunham and four original cast members returning. Here is what has been confirmed.
HBO is bringing Girls back for five new episodes, with Lena Dunham returning as Hannah Horvath alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells.
Announced on 13 October, the limited revival will reunite the central cast a decade after the original comedy ended. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, although HBO has not yet announced a release date.
Dunham created the original series and starred as Hannah, an aspiring writer navigating relationships, friendships and work in New York. The show ran for six seasons between 2012 and 2017, earning 19 Emmy nominations and winning two awards.
The returning cast will include Williams as Marnie Michaels, Kirke as Jessa Johansson, Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro and Rannells as Elijah Krantz. Judd Apatow is also returning as executive producer.
Dunham said the team had always intended to return only if there was a specific story worth telling. She explained that the characters began coming back to her creatively around her 40th birthday, giving her a reason to consider where they might be in the present day.
That leaves an important question about how the new episodes will approach the characters’ lives. The original series explored the uncertainty of early adulthood, including the gap between the futures its characters imagined and the lives they actually built.
A five-episode run offers a different format from the original six-season series. It could allow the revival to concentrate on a particular period in the characters’ lives rather than attempting to recreate the original show’s earlier structure.
One notable absence from the confirmed cast announcement is Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s complicated on-and-off partner Adam Sackler. HBO has not announced his return at this time.

For now, the confirmed details are limited to the five-episode order, the returning cast and production beginning in 2027. Further casting and release information has yet to be announced.
