Ghosts Returns to UK Cinemas as Button House Faces a Supernatural Possession

The much-loved BBC comedy Ghosts has returned with its first feature film, bringing the eccentric residents of Button House back together for a supernatural adventure in UK cinemas.

Ghosts: The Possession of Button House opened on Friday 23 October, almost three years after the television series came to an end. The film reunites familiar characters while introducing a new storyline involving visitors attempting to communicate with the spirits occupying the property.

For audiences who followed the original series, the cinema release offers an opportunity to revisit one of British television's most distinctive comedy ensembles.

What Happens in the Ghosts Film?

The film follows three friends whose attempts to make contact with the supernatural residents of a haunted house lead to an unexpected adventure.

Button House has always been home to an unusual collection of spirits, each carrying attitudes and habits from the period in which they lived. Their inability to leave the property has created years of arguments, friendships and occasionally touching moments as they attempt to make sense of the modern world.

The new story takes the supernatural premise further, with possession playing an important part in the film's central adventure. That development gives the comedy opportunities beyond the familiar situation of ghosts watching the living without being able to interact with them directly.

Original Cast Returns

Charlotte Ritchie, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Lolly Adefope and Jim Howick are among the returning cast members, reuniting audiences with familiar faces from the television series.

The film is directed by Simon Hynd and retains the combination of supernatural comedy and character-driven humour that helped make the BBC programme so popular.

One of the original show's greatest strengths was its ability to create a convincing group of characters who had almost nothing in common beyond their shared circumstances. Their different historical backgrounds generated much of the comedy, while their relationships gradually became an important part of the programme's emotional appeal.

A New Chapter After the Television Finale

The original Ghosts concluded in December 2023 after five series, bringing Alison and Mike's story to an emotional close. The decision to revisit Button House through a feature film allows the fictional world to continue without requiring another full television series.

The move to cinema also gives the production a larger setting for its supernatural adventure, while retaining the established characters and humour that audiences already recognise.

Ghosts: The Possession of Button House is rated PG and runs for approximately 97 minutes. It is showing in UK cinemas now, while all five series of the original BBC comedy are available through BBC iPlayer.
