Between chapters, followers can now see Clara and Valerie having coffee, spending time together or sharing small moments that might never need to become full scenes within the novel.

Fernanda says she had not imagined any of that when she first began writing.

“I started with a story. That was it.”

As the project developed, however, she began to see how images, music and short videos could allow readers to remain connected to Clara and Valerie even after a chapter had ended. A visual might highlight a tiny detail differently, while a song can become associated with a particular moment and conversations between followers can continue long after something has been posted.

That experience has changed the way Fernanda thinks about the boundaries of a novel.

“A story doesn’t necessarily have to stop at the edge of the page.”

The AI-created visual side of High Tides is not intended simply to illustrate scenes readers have already encountered. Fernanda has previously explained that she wants viewers to feel as though they have briefly stepped inside Clara and Valerie’s world, whether that means experiencing the stillness of an early morning, the warmth of an ordinary evening or recognising from a look that something is wrong.

Importantly, Fernanda still sees the written story as the foundation. She does not believe every novel needs videos, images or music, and she is equally clear that those formats should not replace reading the characters’ full story.

Instead, High Tides has gradually developed a space around the novel where people can return to the characters between chapters. That has also created a community where readers discuss scenes, notice details and form their own interpretations while the central story continues on its original course.

Fernanda describes the relationship between those different formats simply.

“The book tells the story. Everything around it lets that story keep breathing between the pages.”

For High Tides, that increasingly means Clara and Valerie no longer exist only when someone opens the next chapter. Their written story remains the centre, but the world around them can continue moving between the pages.
