Emmerdale confirms Tom King’s chilling return

Emmerdale has confirmed James Chase is returning as Tom, with a chilling parole development threatening the freedom Belle fought so hard to reclaim. After surviving his abuse and seeing him sent to prison, she must now face the terrifying prospect of him getting back into her life.

James will first appear on screen later this year as the soap revisits the lasting consequences of Tom’s abuse. His return brings a new battle for Belle, who learns that the man responsible for her ordeal is up for parole.

Viewers previously watched Tom use coercive control, psychological abuse and cyber-stalking to leave Belle frightened and isolated. His cruelty also extended to her beloved dog Piper, as he repeatedly found ways to hurt and control her.

A conviction and prison sentence finally brought consequences for his actions, but news of a possible release threatens to reopen wounds Belle has worked hard to overcome. With Kammy and her family beside her, she will fight to keep Tom away from the village.

“James’ return isn’t just about bringing back a familiar face; it’s about reigniting a complex and challenging story. When Belle gets the news that Tom is up for parole she's forced to confront a trauma she battled hard to overcome. With her family and new partner Kammy by her side, we explore the lasting impact of Tom's abusive actions on Belle as she fights to keep Tom away from the village.”

For James, stepping back into the role means returning to a character whose obsession with Belle has already caused devastating harm. His comments about the comeback suggest that Tom’s need for control remains central to the story.

James Chase said:

“Stepping back into Tom’s shoes is a responsibility I don’t take lightly. He is a character driven by obsession and a desperate need for control, and it is both fascinating and challenging to step back into that mindset. The audience knows exactly who he is and what he is capable of, so the challenge now is to show the lengths he is willing to go to in order to get what he wants, even if it means dismantling Belle's life all over again. It’s a dark path, and I’m ready to see how far Tom will push it.”

Tom’s release has not been confirmed, but the prospect alone forces Belle to confront a future she has every reason to fear.

She knows exactly what he is capable of, and keeping him away means protecting the life she is rebuilding with people who love her.
