Ellen DeGeneres says she misses television as she considers UK projects
Ellen DeGeneres says she misses television and reflects on the different reactions to her coming out in Britain and America.
Ellen DeGeneres has hinted that she could return to television in Britain, admitting that she misses being on screen and has thought about making new programmes in the UK.
Appearing on The Graham Norton Show on 16 October, the comedian said, “I’ve nothing really going on and I really miss being on TV.” She explained that she misses laughing with her writers and audience, as well as welcoming guests onto her show.
DeGeneres also joked that British television seemed easy to get into, pointing to programmes about pottery, sewing and people watching television. However, she has not announced a new series or confirmed a deal with a British broadcaster.
Why Britain holds special memories
DeGeneres made television history in 1997 when she came out publicly, both as a person and through her sitcom character. The decision prompted significant backlash in America, making the positive response she received in London especially meaningful.
Reflecting on that period with Norton, she said, “In the US they were not very thrilled about my character or me coming out so for it to be celebrated in London was such an honour.”
Her comments are a reminder of how much the television landscape has changed for LGBTQ+ performers, and how personally significant visibility can be after facing rejection.
Her daytime talk show ran for 19 seasons before ending in 2022 amid controversy over its workplace culture. Since then, she has focused on stand-up and released the Netflix special For Your Approval.
DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, moved to the UK in 2024 and have spoken about enjoying a quieter life. A British television project could offer a different route back to the screen, although nothing has been confirmed.
