Earl Spencer stands by Diana book after admitting error on Lorraine

Earl Spencer has defended his book about his sister Diana during an appearance on Lorraine, insisting he stands by it after acknowledging an error. Speaking to the presenter, Diana’s brother said he had apologised and that a correction would be made in the second edition.

Lorraine questioned whether that mistake had given critics an opportunity to challenge other parts of his account. Earl Spencer remained firm in his response, saying he stood by the book and its passages concerning King Charles.

He also rejected the suggestion that he had written it to attack the monarch. Instead, Earl Spencer said the material about the King was included in the context of explaining the eulogy he delivered at Diana’s funeral.

During the interview, Diana’s brother linked the closing sentiment of his speech to a remark he alleged King Charles had made about Diana being forgotten. He said explaining how the eulogy came together provided a way to look back at his sister’s life.

The conversation also turned to whether William and Harry had been consulted about the book. Asked if he had discussed its contents with either of Diana’s sons, Earl Spencer said he had spoken only to his wife.

He explained that he wanted to take full responsibility for what he chose to share. He also felt that approach would make things easier for his family, avoiding questions about why they had allowed particular details to remain or had not asked him to remove them.

Beyond the criticism, Earl Spencer said he wanted the book to reach two generations of readers. For those who remembered Diana, he hoped it would remind them why she had meant so much.

For younger readers, he wanted to offer a fuller understanding of the person behind the photographs. His aim, he explained, was to help people who had never known Diana during her lifetime understand who she was.
