Diablo Is Officially Coming to Netflix With a New Animated Series

One of gaming’s biggest dark fantasy worlds is officially heading to television, with Blizzard confirming that a new Diablo animated series is now in development with Netflix.

The announcement was made during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on 12 September as Blizzard celebrated 30 years of the Diablo franchise. For fans who have spent decades exploring Sanctuary, this will open the world to an entirely new audience.

Blizzard has deliberately kept the first announcement brief. The company confirmed that the animated series will be set within the world of Diablo and is being developed with Netflix, but no characters, voice cast, episode count or release date have been revealed yet.

The scale of the audience is already huge. Blizzard says more than 130 million players worldwide have entered Sanctuary across the Diablo franchise since the original game launched in 1996. The television announcement arrives as Blizzard also begins looking towards the next major era of the games.

BlizzCon also delivered the first details of Diablo V, which is scheduled for spring 2029. The next game begins in a very different Sanctuary where Diablo has won, previous heroes have failed and players will enter a world already reshaped by his victory.

For Netflix, Diablo also offers the ingredients for a substantial adult animated fantasy series. Demons, angels, enormous battles and decades of established mythology give the adaptation plenty to work with, while animation removes many of the limitations that would come with trying to recreate Sanctuary in live action.

There is still plenty we do not know, including whether familiar characters from the games will appear and where the series will sit within the wider Diablo timeline. Those details should become clearer as Netflix and Blizzard move further into production.

For now, the important news is that after 30 years as one of gaming’s biggest dark fantasy franchises, Diablo is officially making the jump to television.

Where to watch: The new Diablo animated series will stream on Netflix. A release date has not yet been announced.
