Dark Matter Season 2 Is Here as Apple TV Brings Back Its Hit Sci-Fi Thriller

Dark Matter has returned to Apple TV for its second season, bringing Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly back for another chapter of the reality-bending sci-fi thriller.

Season 2 premiered on 28 August, with the opening episode available to stream now. The ten-episode season will continue with a new instalment every Friday through to 30 October, making it one of Apple TV’s biggest returning dramas heading into autumn.

Based on the bestselling novel by Blake Crouch, Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen, played by Joel Edgerton, whose seemingly ordinary life was shattered when he was abducted into an alternate version of his own world.

The first season sent Jason through a maze of different realities as he desperately tried to find his way back to his family. His journey became increasingly complicated by the discovery that another version of Jason had effectively stolen the life he had left behind.

Season 2 now has to deal with the consequences of everything that happened rather than simply repeating the same mystery.

Jennifer Connelly returns as Daniela, while Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Amanda Brugel are also back as part of the ensemble cast.

Creator and showrunner Blake Crouch continues to lead the series, meaning the story remains closely connected to the writer responsible for the original novel.

Dark Matter became one of Apple TV’s notable sci-fi dramas following its launch in 2024, joining a growing collection of ambitious genre series on the service.

Its central idea remains one of its biggest attractions. Rather than treating alternate realities purely as a science-fiction spectacle, the series uses them to explore the different lives people could have lived and what might happen if someone was given the opportunity to choose again.

That creates a much more personal story underneath the bigger concept, particularly for Jason and Daniela as the consequences of the different realities continue to affect their family.

With Season 2 now streaming, viewers who enjoyed the first run can finally find out where the story goes after its increasingly complicated finale.

For anyone who missed Dark Matter when it first arrived, both seasons are available through Apple TV, although starting from the beginning is essential given how heavily the story relies on the choices, relationships and alternate versions established during Season 1.

For sci-fi fans looking for something new to watch, Dark Matter is back at exactly the right time, with another ten episodes set to push its multiverse story even further.
