Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 arrives on Netflix this week, but there’s a big change

Netflix is returning to Night City this week with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a new anime series set in the dangerous world of Cyberpunk 2077. However, viewers hoping to see the original characters return for another chapter should be prepared for a different story.

The 10-episode series premieres globally on Netflix on 20 October 2026, introducing a new group of characters whose lives become entangled in the violence, ambition and corporate power struggles of Night City.

Rather than continuing David and Lucy’s story directly, the new instalment follows different characters in a standalone narrative. That means viewers can enter this chapter without needing the new series to pick up where the first left off.

Who are the new characters?

The official series information introduces Weak, a washed-up cyberpunk legend who must learn to live without his cybernetic enhancements while searching for a new purpose. Another central character is D, a deadly nomad whose pursuit of revenge brings them dangerously close to corporate secrets.

Their stories explore family, obsession, legacy and the struggle to survive in a city where violence is commonplace and human lives can become disposable.

The new cast gives the creative team an opportunity to explore different experiences within the same dystopian world. While the setting will be familiar to returning viewers, the characters and their personal conflicts are new.

Who is making Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2?

The series reunites CD Projekt Red, the company behind Cyberpunk 2077, with Japanese animation studio Studio Trigger.

Director Kai Ikarashi leads the new instalment, with Kanno Ichigo as lead character designer. The creative team also includes Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka, who are returning to the world of Edgerunners.

The production promises a reimagined animation style while retaining the intense, futuristic setting that helped establish the original series.

The first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became known for combining explosive action with a tragic story about people trying to find their place in a society that treats them as expendable. The new series has the opportunity to explore similar themes through an entirely different group of characters.

Do you need to watch the original first?

Watching the first series is worthwhile if you want to understand the wider world and its atmosphere, but the new instalment has its own story and cast.

New viewers can therefore start with Edgerunners 2, while returning fans can discover another part of Night City without expecting a direct continuation of the previous characters’ lives.
