Cheltenham museum reopens after six years with a free weekend of events
The Wilson in Cheltenham reopens its museum galleries on 24 October, with a free weekend of family activities, creative workshops and opportunities to explore the town’s history.
A major museum reopening is bringing a fresh look at Cheltenham’s history, with The Wilson welcoming visitors into its refurbished museum galleries from Saturday 24 October 2026.
The reopening marks the end of a four-year refurbishment project that has transformed the museum’s spaces and the way its collections tell the story of the town. The project has been shaped by more than 58,000 responses to the Big Museum Project, which invited people to share which stories and experiences they felt should be represented.
To celebrate, The Wilson is holding a programme of free activities across the reopening weekend, with further events taking place during the following week.

The celebrations begin on Friday 23 October with a free community party from 5pm to 7pm. Visitors will be among the first to explore the new galleries, with live music, creative workshops, a conservation station and refreshments included in the event.
The museum reopening weekend runs on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, with free entry and activities for visitors of different ages. The wider programme includes family workshops, hands-on creative activities, performances inspired by Cheltenham’s history, curator tours and opportunities to learn about the conservation of museum objects.
The Wilson’s collection contains around 250,000 objects, covering art, history, costume, science and nature. The new displays have been selected to tell a broad range of stories, including familiar moments in Cheltenham’s past as well as lesser-known experiences and voices.
That focus on local stories makes the reopening more than a chance to see refurbished galleries. Visitors can explore how the town has changed, discover objects connected with its history and learn about the people whose lives have helped shape the area.
The free events also make the reopening an option for families looking for an autumn half-term activity without an admission charge. Some activities may have individual timings or booking requirements, so visitors should check the full programme before travelling.
The Wilson is on Clarence Street in central Cheltenham. The museum is easy to combine with other town-centre activities, making it a possible stop for a day trip as well as a visit for local residents.
How to visit: Entry to the reopening weekend is free. Find the full event details and visitor information on The Wilson’s official website and check opening and visitor information before setting off.
