Charli XCX has joined the cast of What Happens at Night, Martin Scorsese's new Gothic psychological horror film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.

No character name has been reported, and nothing has been said about how much of the film she appears in. That makes her part one of the more intriguing unknowns around a project whose story has largely been kept under wraps beyond its unsettling premise.

What Happens at Night is adapted from the 2020 novel of the same name by the American author Peter Cameron. It follows a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby, and as they struggle to bring the child home, it becomes clear that they know less about themselves than they thought. DiCaprio and Lawrence play the unnamed husband and wife, and they are joined by Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson and Jared Harris.

For Charli XCX, the role continues a busy move into acting. She played a fictionalised version of herself in the A24 film The Moment, and she also appears in Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex, which stars Olivia Wilde.

A cameo for Scorsese sits comfortably alongside that run of projects and will put her in front of a very different audience from her pop fanbase.

The first full trailer is likely to be the point at which fans learn whether Charli XCX features in the marketing at all, so Apple's next update on the film will be worth watching for.
