Channel 4 orders The Body Thief on funeral home scandal
Channel 4 commissions The Body Thief, a two-part documentary exploring the Legacy funeral home scandal through police and affected families.
Channel 4 has commissioned a two-part documentary about the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors scandal.
Announced on 2 October, The Body Thief is a working title, with no broadcast date confirmed.
The two hour-long programmes will feature exclusive access to Humberside Police and affected families. They will follow the investigation and include crucial police custody interviews, alongside relatives’ experiences.
Police began investigating in March 2024 after concerns were raised about the care of the deceased. Detectives discovered 35 bodies at the Legacy premises and ashes belonging to well over 100 people across its sites in Hull and the surrounding area.
More than 300 victims were identified during the investigation. Some families discovered that their relatives had not been cremated and that the ashes returned to them were not those of their loved ones.
Brinkworth Productions is making the series, with Lorna-Dawn Creanor and Malcolm Brinkworth as executive producers. The films will explore the impact on bereaved families and the detectives working to establish what happened.
