Channel 4 Embraces TikTok-Style Drama With New Digital Series

Channel 4 is moving into mobile-first scripted entertainment with The Guest List, a five-part vertical drama that combines short-form storytelling with a commercial brand partnership.

Produced by curly media in collaboration with beauty brand Sol de Janeiro, the series follows four women in their twenties navigating careers, relationships and friendship in London. The story unfolds through the intimacy of a group chat, with episodes designed specifically for audiences watching on their phones.

The commission marks Channel 4’s first branded microdrama, as broadcasters explore ways to reach viewers through social media rather than relying solely on traditional television formats.

The series will premiere across Channel 4’s Meta, TikTok and YouTube platforms from 24 October.

Channel 4 explores a new format for scripted entertainment

Vertical video has become a familiar format across social media, where content is designed to fill a smartphone screen without requiring viewers to rotate their devices. While the format is widely associated with short videos and creator content, The Guest List applies the same approach to scripted drama.

The five episodes follow four women as they navigate career dilemmas, new romantic interests and preparations for nights out. Their conversations and group chat provide the framework for the story, bringing the format closer to the digital communication habits of its intended audience.

By commissioning a drama specifically for social platforms, Channel 4 is exploring how established broadcasters can deliver original fiction in spaces where audiences already spend time watching video. The short-form structure also offers viewers a way to follow a story without committing to a conventional television episode.

How the brand partnership works

Sol de Janeiro’s Intense Mist fragrance range forms part of the creative concept, with each of the four central characters associated with a different scent. Rather than keeping the brand separate from the programme, the partnership connects its products with the characters and their personalities.

The project therefore combines entertainment commissioning with brand integration, giving Sol de Janeiro a role in the programme’s creative identity while allowing Channel 4 to experiment with a different commercial model for original content.

Ameenah Taher, Channel 4’s Digital Commissioning Executive, said the project offered an opportunity to explore an emerging storytelling format through a character-led story about friendship, ambition and the lives of young women.

When can you watch The Guest List?

The Guest List will premiere on 24 October across Channel 4’s Meta, TikTok and YouTube platforms.

Its vertical format is designed for mobile viewing, allowing audiences to follow the story through short episodes on social media rather than a traditional television broadcast.
