Bridgerton star Jessica Madsen joins new Viking drama Bloodaxe
Jessica Madsen swaps Bridgerton’s Regency world for Viking history in Bloodaxe, the new Prime Video drama arriving in January 2027.
Bridgerton star Jessica Madsen is heading into a very different period drama with Bloodaxe, a new Viking series coming to Prime Video on 20 January 2027.
The series, created by Vikings writer Michael Hirst, follows Norse warrior Erik Bloodaxe and his wife Gunnhild as they fight for power amid rivalries and political upheaval in 10th-century Scandinavia. Madsen plays Gunnhild, with Xavier Molyneux taking the lead role.

A very different role for Jessica Madsen
Madsen is known to many viewers for playing Cressida Cowper in Bridgerton. Bloodaxe moves her into a harsher historical setting, with royal ambition, warfare and shifting loyalties at the centre of the story.
Prime Video has already renewed the series for a second season, which is in production in Ireland ahead of the first season’s release.
When can viewers watch Bloodaxe?
All eight episodes of Bloodaxe will arrive on Prime Video on 20 January 2027.
The first season’s teaser trailer was unveiled at New York Comic Con on 9 October.
