Billy Elliot returns to UK theatres after 10 years away

Billy Elliot the Musical is finally returning to UK stages this autumn, bringing one of Britain’s biggest modern musicals home after a decade away.

The new production begins at Sunderland Empire on 4 November before moving to Manchester’s Palace Theatre from 2 December until 9 January. Edinburgh follows in January, before Billy Elliot returns to London for a limited 25 week West End season at the Adelphi Theatre from 12 February 2027.

Billy Elliot began as the hugely successful 2000 British film starring Jamie Bell as Billy, a boy growing up in a mining community who unexpectedly discovers a talent for ballet. The stage version was created with music by Elton John and went on to become an international phenomenon.

The musical is set during the miners’ strike of 1984 and 1985. Billy initially attends boxing lessons before stumbling into a ballet class, where his ability begins opening up a completely different future from the one expected of him.

His ambitions unfold against a much bigger family and community story. Billy’s father and brother are caught up in the strike, while money, class and expectations about masculinity all become obstacles as he tries to pursue dancing.

The production has now been seen by more than 12 million people across five continents and has collected more than 85 awards worldwide. Its 2026 return marks ten years since the musical last played audiences in its original UK home.

Starting the comeback in Sunderland and Manchester also feels particularly appropriate for a story rooted so heavily in northern working class life. Audiences in both cities get the chance to see Billy before the production eventually returns to the West End.
