Be My Baby musical brings 1960s hits to Nottingham world premiere

A new British musical featuring some of the best-known songs of the 1960s is heading to Nottingham Playhouse. Be My Baby: The Musical will receive its world premiere in 2027, adapting Amanda Whittington’s play for a new production directed by Adam Penford.

Set in 1964, the story follows Mary, Norma, Queenie and Dolores at St Saviours, a home for unmarried mothers in a Nottinghamshire town. The four young women find friendship through their shared love of girl groups as they face uncertainty about their own futures and those of their babies.

The soundtrack includes Be My Baby, Alfie and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. These familiar songs become part of a story about the women’s relationships and the pressures they face during their pregnancies.

The original play was first performed by Soho Theatre Company at London’s Pleasance Theatre in 1998 and has since been revived by other companies. Music was already woven into the play, with its characters singing along to records, while the new production develops the story into a musical.
