BBC Three to close as TV channel in major shake-up leaving viewers with questions

BBC Three will disappear from traditional television in spring 2027 as the BBC prepares another major shift towards digital broadcasting. The decision, announced on 20 October, also affects BBC Scotland and Radio 4 Extra as the broadcaster attempts to tackle a £500 million funding challenge.

The move raises questions about the future of younger-skewing entertainment and LGBTQ+ programming, particularly after several high-profile cancellations. However, BBC Three itself is not disappearing completely, with its content set to continue online.

Why is BBC Three closing?

The BBC is moving BBC Three away from scheduled television broadcasting and towards digital platforms, including BBC iPlayer and YouTube.

It will be the second time the channel has made this transition. BBC Three originally became an online-only service in 2016 before returning to linear television in 2022.

The latest decision forms part of wider savings across the corporation. BBC Scotland will also cease operating as a traditional television channel, while Radio 4 Extra will close as a standalone station.

What does this mean for LGBTQ+ programming?

BBC Three has played an important role in bringing younger audiences stories and entertainment that have not always received mainstream attention.

Its changing future comes after the cancellation of LGBTQ+ dating programmes I Kissed a Boy and I Kissed a Girl, alongside the decision to end RuPaul's Drag Race UK.

However, the closure of BBC Three's television channel does not automatically mean every programme associated with the brand will disappear. The BBC intends to continue reaching younger audiences through digital distribution.

When will BBC Three disappear from television?

The change is scheduled for spring 2027, although an exact switch-off date has not yet been announced.

Viewers will still be able to access BBC Three content digitally, making this a change in how programmes are distributed rather than the complete disappearance of the channel's identity.
