Anna Nicole Smith’s story told in Trust Me, I’m a Doctor

Anna Nicole Smith’s turbulent final years are revisited in Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, a new comedy-drama inspired by the events surrounding the celebrity’s death in 2007.

Abbie Cornish plays Smith, the model and television personality whose life became a constant subject of tabloid fascination. Kal Penn stars as Dr Sandeep Kapoor, a closeted gay doctor who became caught up in the media storm and legal investigation that followed her death.

Based on Kapoor’s memoir, the film explores how the case transformed his life as public scrutiny intensified and his professional reputation came under pressure.

Fame, scandal and a fight to clear his name

Smith rose to fame as a Playboy model before becoming an actress and reality television star. Her death at the age of 39 prompted an investigation and worldwide media attention, with those around her facing questions about the circumstances leading up to her death.

Kapoor was charged in connection with the case and later acquitted. The film follows his fight to clear his name against a backdrop of celebrity culture, intense press coverage and legal uncertainty.

Directed by Thane Economou, Trust Me, I’m a Doctor also stars Linda Hamilton as Kapoor’s attorney, alongside David Julian Hirsh and Elon Gold.

The film blends comedy, drama and true crime to explore a notorious chapter in celebrity history. Its portrayal of real events is a dramatic interpretation rather than a complete historical account, and its depiction of Smith has attracted criticism.

Where to watch

Trust Me, I’m a Doctor opened in US cinemas on 16 October 2026.
