Almost Out Loud brings an unfinished WLW love story back to life
Meet Mara and Leah in Almost Out Loud, a WLW romance about two women whose unfinished history returns when they become neighbours.
Mara and Leah have known each other long enough to recognise the meaning behind an old joke. They have also spent years avoiding a more difficult conversation. In the new WLW series Almost Out Loud, that conversation becomes harder to put off when Leah moves into the apartment directly across the hall from Mara.
Their reunion has the ease of two people who already share a history. They tease each other, return to private references and quickly find the rhythm they once had. Beneath it is a connection neither woman has been willing to name. Seeing each other again is one thing; becoming neighbours means finding out whether they can keep treating that connection as friendship.

Mara is a book editor who is observant, steady and careful with her feelings. Leah is a publicist whose warmth and energy make her seem more open, though she has never quite settled anywhere. Their differences give the relationship its shape. Mara remembers their past, while Leah’s return places both of them in the middle of it again.
The first episode, Wonderland Next Door, begins with Leah’s move across the hall. An Alice in Wonderland thread becomes part of the language she and Mara share, giving their conversations a familiarity that reaches back beyond this new chapter of their lives. As they spend time together, the episode draws attention to the pauses and gestures that suggest more than either woman says aloud.
By the rooftop scene, their old jokes can only take them so far. Mara and Leah come close to expressing something real, but the series allows that moment to remain unresolved. Their relationship is built to develop gradually, with room for viewers to understand why speaking honestly feels like such a risk when they already mean so much to each other.
Creator Cristina Rodríguez writes and directs Almost Out Loud as a slow-burn romance centred on mature women. Mara and Leah’s sexuality is part of their lives, while the tension between them comes from their shared history, vulnerability and fear of changing their relationship. Friends, family and LGBTQ+ community will also feature as their world grows beyond the two apartments.
Cristina edits the independently created series and composes and produces its original soundtrack. The music has begun to reach viewers away from the screen, with some sending her photographs of themselves listening to the songs and others asking for sheet music so they can play them. It offers another way to spend time in Mara and Leah’s world between scenes.
Episode one is available to watch in full on YouTube, and episode two is continuing scene by scene. If you like a romance built on shared history, lingering looks and the things people almost say, Mara and Leah are ready to meet you.
